First drawn to wildlife as a teenager by an elaborate book of images by a German photographer, I began pencil renderings of different animals and birds. Sketching transitioned to nature photography with the purchase of my first professional camera, a Nikon F5, in the year 2000.

I have always enjoyed nature and wildlife and have spent a great deal of time outdoors. Photography allowed me to experience the outdoors at a different level. I transitioned to digital with the purchase of a Nikon D1 and later switched to a Canon system. The camera I now use is the Canon EOS 1D Mark II.

My career has been in general business administration, including my time as Business Manager for Greg Downing Photography while also assisting on photo workshops. I co-founded the nature photography website NatureScapes.Net and also perform the role of Editor in Chief. In addition to the site containing articles that pertain to the craft of nature photography, NatureScapes.Net's online forums are a fantastic resource for discussing pertinent topics and receiving valuable image critiques.

The pursuit of nature photography has taken me to different places throughout North America, including Churchill (Manitoba, Canada), Alaska, California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Florida, numerous destinations along the mid-Atlantic coastline, Vermont, and Montana. I have also photographed at the Galápagos Islands of Ecuador, South America.

Having presented my work in slide shows for a variety of audiences throughout my travels, I now also offer paid speaking engagements. Perfect for birding groups, camera clubs, nature centers and more! Please visit my presentations page for more information or contact me about rates and availability.

My photos have appeared with various news stories through the Associated Press, such as in The New York Times, The Washington Post, on CNN Headline News (television), CNN.com, MSNBC.com, and AOL news online. One photo became Yahoo! News Photos "Most Emailed" image; another became "Most Recommended" for the week they appeared.

I have a portfolio of stock nature photographs available through AP Images World Wide Photos.

It was a distinct honor for me to serve as a judge for the American Birding Association's ABA/Leica Young Birder of The Year Contest: Photography Module for 2003, 2004 and 2005. For young birders interested in participating in the upcoming contest, please see the details at the ABA website.
